ریڈنگز:
آدَمُ … كَلِمَاتٍ
fa-talaqqā Ādamu min rabbihī kalimātin
“Adam received words from his Lord”
This has the typical order of verb-subject-object: Adam encounters/receives the words.
آدَمَ … كَلِمَاتٌ
fa-talaqqā Ādama min rabbihī kalimātun
“words reached Adam from his Lord”
Here ‘words’ is the delayed subject, and the verb talaqqā denotes them reaching Adam (the object).
وضاحت:
The two readings amount to the same meaning, but they can be seen to represent two dimensions of the event. The first reading indicates Adam’s humility and readiness to accept the words being sent to him. In the second, the emphasis is on God’s grace in sending those words [see Makki and al-Alusi].
He has revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ the Book in truth, confirming what came before it, as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel
