حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ قَالَ عَمْرٌو سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّه ِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ يَقُولُ فِينَا نَزَلَتْ ‏<a href="https://quran.com/3/122-122">{‏إِذْ هَمَّتْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ تَفْشَلاَ وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا‏}</a>‏ قَالَ نَحْنُ الطَّائِفَتَانِ بَنُو حَارِثَةَ وَبَنُو سَلِمَةَ، وَمَا نُحِبُّ ـ وَقَالَ سُفْيَانُ مَرَّةً وَمَا يَسُرُّنِي ـ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تُنْزَلْ لِقَوْلِ اللَّهِ ‏<a href="https://quran.com/3/122-122">{‏وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا‏}</a>‏

باب ‏<a href="https://quran.com/3/122-122">{‏إِذْ هَمَّتْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ تَفْشَلاَ‏}</a>‏

Narrated Jabir bin `Abdullah:

The Verse:--"When two parties from among you were about to lose heart, but Allah was their 
Protector," (3.122) was revealed concerning us, and we were the two parties, i.e. Banu Haritha and 
Banu Salama, and we do not wish (that it had not been revealed) or I would not have been pleased (if 
it had not been revealed), for Allah says:--"...Allah was their Protector."

"When two parties from among you were about to lose heart..." (V.3:122)

Sahih al-Bukhari

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ فِينَا ‏<a href="https://quran.com/3/122-122">{‏إِذْ هَمَّتْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ تَفْشَلاَ‏}</a>‏ بَنِي سَلِمَةَ وَبَنِي حَارِثَةَ، وَمَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّهَا لَمْ تَنْزِلْ، وَاللَّهُ يَقُولُ ‏<a href="https://quran.com/3/122-122">{‏وَاللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا‏}</a>‏

Narrated Jabir:

This Verse: "When two of your parties almost Decided to fall away..." was revealed in our connection, 
i.e. Bani Salama and Bani Haritha and I would not have liked that, if it was not revealed, for Allah 
said:-- But Allah was their Protector.....(3.122)

“…but Allah was their Wali.”

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْحَنْظَلِيُّ، وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ، - وَاللَّفْظُ لإِسْحَاقَ - قَالاَ
 أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ فِينَا نَزَلَتْ ‏<a href="https://quran.com/3/122-122">{‏ إِذْ هَمَّتْ طَائِفَتَانِ مِنْكُمْ

باب مِنْ فَضَائِلِ الأَنْصَارِ رضى الله تعالى عنهم ‏‏

Jabir b. Abdullah reported that it was concerning them (the Ansar) that this verse was revealed, that when the two groups amongst you were about to lose heart and Allah was the Guardian of them both. This concerned Banu Salama and Banu Haritha and we did not like that Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, should not have revealed this verse for the fact that Allah (gave an assurance) of being the Guardian of both.
